Copyright: Policies
Overview
How can you ensure that the staff in your organisation and the users of your facilities are aware of their roles and responsibilities regarding copyright compliance? This course provides an introduction to the importance of developing clear copyright procedures, processes and policies within museums, galleries and other cultural heritage organisations and examines how they might be successfully implemented.
Topics include:
- Why is copyright compliance a relevant issue for our sector?
- What might happen if copyright is infringed?
- What are copyright policies and why are they important?
- What form should a copyright policy take?
- How can you make sure that your copyright policy is used and understood?
The course is fully supported by Collections Trust copyright resources. Participants will also receive packs of copyright materials.
Objectives
By the end of the course participants will have:
- Considered the importance of copyright compliance and best copyright practice
- Understood the necessity of clear procedures and processes regarding copyright compliance and rights management
- Considered the various types of copyright policies that they might implement within their organisation
- Started thinking about what they might include within their own copyright policy
- Discussed their own requirements and concerns with the Trainer
- Shared experiences with other participants
- Assessed their own procedures and practices against good practice
- Considered further resources
- Been provided with Collections Trust support materials and relevant fact sheets
Participants
This course is suitable for both employees and volunteers who are:
- Wanting to develop a copyright policy for their organisation
- Establishing or improving rights management procedures within their organisation
- Considering how their organisation might maximise its assets and/or reduce its copyright risks
Training Methods
This course will deliver the objectives using a mix of presentations, practical exercises, group work, discussions, and one to one consultancy.
Preparation
Participants should have considered copyright issues and practices within their own museums, and are encouraged to bring examples of their institution's copyright issues and any current copyright policies for discussion on the day.
