Culture Grid

From online catalogues to digital photographs of artefacts, the UK's museums, archives and libraries are generating a huge amount of digital content every year.

This tremendous push towards opening up culture via the Internet is helping these organisations to reach out to new and existing audiences in interesting and creative ways. But much of it is still failing to reach a mainstream audience who aren't traditional users of cultural services.

To address this problem, the Collections Trust, the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA), the European Commission and technical partners Knowledge Integration Ltd. have joined forces to create the Culture Grid.

What does the Culture Grid do?

The Culture Grid is designed to do two things. Firstly, it pulls together information from the thousands of museum, archive and library websites and databases. Secondly, it serves this information up to media partners such as Google and the BBC to ensure that it is available to as wide an audience as possible.

You can find out more and get involved at www.culturegrid.org.uk and keep up to date with our series of news bulletins reporting on Culture Grid developments:

    Use the Culture Grid

The simplest way to use the Culture Grid is to place a custom search box on your website using the Culture Grid Search Box Builder:

This example searches for images from two collections in Leeds and Devon Libraries, namely Leodis: A Photographic Archive of Leeds and Etched on Devon's Memory
