Documentation Refresher
Overview
This course provides a refresher for museum advisors on the principles of a museum documentation system with particular reference to MLA's Museum Accreditation Scheme. The course examines the content of effective documentation systems and considers the requirements for developing documentation plans and identifying and setting priorities for dealing with documentation backlogs.
The course is aimed at meeting the needs of museum advisors such as Museums Development Officers and Curatorial Advisors. It enables participants to explore how to encourage the raising of documentation standards in their client museums.
Topics covered include SPECTRUM, the Museum Accreditation Scheme, the assessment of museum systems against the Accreditation requirements for documentation, backlogs, documentation planning and organisational priorities.
Objectives
By the end of the course participants will have:
- Considered the importance of good documentation practice
- Examined and discussed the Museum Accreditation Scheme documentation requirements
- Revisited the principals and use of SPECTRUM
- Understood why it is important for museums to set priorities
- Explored how to help museums set priorities for documentation
- Discussed strategies to help museums to influence decision making within their organisation

Training Methods
This course will deliver the objectives using a mix of presentations, case studies, informal discussion and one to one consultancy. Maximum course size of 10 participants.
Preparation
Participants must possess an understanding of the basic requirements for a museum documentation system. Participants will be sent a copy of the Collections Trust Accreditation Checklist to identify areas requiring additional clarification and discussion.
