New Guide to Copyright for Cultural Heritage Organisations
18th Jan, 2010
The Collections Trust is delighted to announce the publication of a new guide to copyright for cultural heritage organisations.
Copyright: a practical guide was written by the cultural heritage sector's leading copyright consultant Naomi Korn (www.naomikorn.com), together with Gordon McKenna, International Development Manager from the Collections Trust. It provides museums, libraries and archives with a highly practical step-by-step guide to all aspects of managing copyright within a collection, from understanding what rights are and why they matter, to realising the benefits of exploiting rights.
The book includes detailed guidance on areas such as developing a copyright policy, carrying out a rights audit, managing orphan works, getting permission to use collections, and protecting rights. It also features a key steps guide to managing rights, top tips and legal alerts, a model rights permission form and rights audit template as well as a glossary of copyright and licensing terms.
Alex Dawson, Collections Trust Head of Programmes commented, 'This book will give archive, library and museum professionals the knowledge and resources they need to manage the copyright in their collections and to exploit the rights that they hold. It is designed to help practitioners make full use of their collections while also fulfilling their legal and ethical responsibilities.'
Copyright: a practical guide is the fourth book in a Collections Trust series designed to give practitioners, volunteers and students the skills they need to manage their collections effectively. Further titles will be published over the coming months, including guides to security and risk management. For further information on the series, please visit www.collectionstrust.org.uk/books
